WHAT IS PREMARITAL COUNSELING?
Premarital counseling is a type of therapy that helps couples prepare for marriage. Premarital counseling can help ensure that you and your partner have a strong, healthy relationship — giving you a better chance for a stable and satisfying marriage. In addition, it can also help you identify weaknesses that could become bigger problems during marriage.
Premarital counseling is in my opinion the best way to become better prepared for the many challenges you will face in your marital relationship. It focuses on developing skills such as communication, handling conflict, solving problems, and making decisions. It also helps you develop the knowledge, attitudes, expectations, and characteristics that are important in creating a happy and healthy relationship.
WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF PREMARITAL COUNSELING?
Premarital counseling will help each partner assess his or her personal readiness for marriage and will give them the skills to prevent or to be better able to deal with any difficult habits and unhealthy relationship patterns that can be hard to break once they are well established.
I use the PREPARE/ENRICH Couple Check-Up tool which is an online assessment that identifies a couple’s strength and growth areas. It is one of the most widely used programs for premarital counseling and premarital education. Based on a couple’s assessment results, I then provide feedback to help the couple discuss and understand their results.
BENEFITS OF PREMARITAL COUNSELING INCLUDE
- Exploration of strength and growth areas
- Strengthen communication skills
- Identify and manage major stressors
- Learn conflict resolution techniques
- Develop a more balanced relationship
- Exploration of family of origin issues
- Financial planning and budgeting tips
- Discuss conscious and unconscious expectations
- Understand and appreciate personality differences
I provide different options and packages for premarital counseling. Although I don’t make it mandatory to marry a couple, I do highly recommend it to every new couple getting married. It really is an investment in your relationship.
In addition, I think it provides for a better wedding ceremony as I get to know each couple that I counsel which helps me personalize the wedding ceremony even more. I really enjoy the whole process …
